About

Our Vision

Inspired by formats like Penny Dreadful and Value Vintage, Quartermaster Magic was created with a clear purpose: to provide a genuinely affordable paper format for Magic: The Gathering players. Rather than trying to find "budget versions" of expensive formats, Quartermaster Magic establishes a format that is inherently and consistently affordable by design.

How It Works

Card legality is determined during the week leading up to each new Standard set release. We monitor card prices daily across major retailers, and any card that maintains an average price of $0.50 or less throughout this evaluation period becomes legal for the upcoming season.

Format Philosophy

  • Accessibility First: Anyone should be able to build competitive decks without financial barriers
  • Evolving Metagame: As card prices fluctuate, the card pool shifts, creating a fresh environment each season
  • Creativity Rewarded: Discovering underappreciated cards and synergies becomes a core part of the format
  • Paper Play Focus: Designed specifically for in-person play experiences rather than digital platforms

Rules Overview

  • All cards legal in Vintage are potentially legal in Quartermaster Magic, provided they meet the price requirement
  • Cards must maintain an average price of $0.50 or less during the evaluation period
  • The Vintage Restricted List does not apply—if a card is legal, you can play any number of copies
  • Standard deck construction rules apply (minimum 60 cards in main deck, up to 15 card sideboard)
  • Quartermaster Magic maintains its own Ban List for power level concerns

Community

Quartermaster Magic is built around a community of players who value affordability, creativity, and fun gameplay. We welcome players of all experience levels and encourage sharing decklists, strategies, and tournament reports.
